What's this?
These plants grow all over in the ditches. Are those berries or flower buds? It looks kind of cool... probably it's just some garbage plant and I'll be all disappointed that it's nothing special. I'll try to figure it out and report back.

It looks pretty enough to plant in a flower border! You'll have to keep watching to see if those are buds or berries; in either case, it will be a sweet discovery. They remind me of some of the native groundcover in the UP woods; partridge berry and wintergreen.
You need to buy a flower ID, a tree ID and a bird ID guide books! (Hey, what a great gift idea!)
Massey University has a site, "New Zealand Weeds". Might be an interesting place to start...
Then, too, the NZ Highway department has an appendix listing 'appropriate species for landscaping'. I couldn't get into it though-expired...
