Putting down roots

Grammie and Grandpa have been industriously collecting bamboo poles from the nearby field.  The other day, Grandpa cut them to length and Grammie used them to construct two intriguing structures in the side yard, right there in the soil that we've turned up for a garden.  The boys were brimming with questions.  Today we took them outside and satisfied their curiosity.

Each boy got a handful of climbing-bean seeds.  Then some cucumber seeds.

And Grammie showed them where they needed to go.

 Arram spaced his out perfectly.

And Amiri had this whole 'American Gothic' thing going on as he considered how best to cover his seeds up.

After finishing up, we stepped back to survey our work.  In a few months, we'll have two bean- and cucumber-laden teepees, each one just the right size for a boy to sit inside!  Sweet green peas will climb up the smaller trellises.

I'll need to remember to post the 'after' photo!

On the end of the garden, we'll put some tomatoes.  Here are the recruits-- Mom bought these as a packet of a half-dozen bare-root seedlings from a little stand outside the Asian market.  In typical Kiwi generosity, the damp newspaper-wrapped bundle actually contained seven starts.   She put them in pots and they're hardening inside the sand-play box, which as it turns out is a perfect temporary greenhouse!

It's so exciting to see your garden going in! I'm sure it will yield many wonderful adventures - not to mentions meals - as it grows.

The bean seeds in Arram's hands look HUGE! Then I have to remember that his hands are small.

I loved seeing the birth of your new garden. The boys will get so much pleasure from it in many ways. The adults will also get the same pleasure but from an adults perspective.

I am so happy that Spring/Summer has now come to you there. I remember loving the peas from the shell in the garden. Do not count on getting a huge crop when little hands discover the joy of baby peas in the pod directly from the garden.

What nurturing things you are all doing together! This is so great to plant seeds and watch them grow and care for the plants and then recieve the rewards of being good little gardeners!! So happy you can have a little garden there!!
