Independence Day

Arram is done with diapers.

I am still a little afraid to say it right out loud, lest I jinx everything and we go tumbling all Snakes and Ladders style back to square one.

But I think it's actually going to happen, for real this time.  I think he's turned the corner and made his own decision.  Sits on the big toilet and everything.  Takes himself off to the bathroom sometimes, pants-down, pants-up, washes hands, the works, unannounced and unsupervised.

As much as I sometimes wish I had a crystal ball to see into the future, I think that much of my enthusiasm on this excellent day would have fallen a bit flat if I'd known I had 1,057 days of diapers ahead of me yet.

But we've made it now, to the end of this long road (and merging onto another bigger one!)  The excess diapers in our house are now being used for much more palatable purposes.

Oh, what a happy day it must be! It definitely sounds like Arram is ready for his graduation to a big boy with big boy potty habits. It sounds like you have taught him well. Good for you for letting it be "his" decision but you still guided him to that big boy decision. Congratulations, Mom and Arram.

Actually, this is a day for announcing more than one accomplishment....

Allie just got some very impressive news and, as her dad, it's my right to boast a bit about my girl.

You all know that she has written some neuro-science articles in the past that have been published in various scientific journals. Such articles are read by her peers in the profession who need/want to keep up with the latest research.

Well, just today, she was contacted by the editors of one of the top journals in her field, Disability and Rehabilitation, and was asked to be a reviewer of future articles. She will be sent articles and asked to critique them. The editors need an expert who can give solid, constructive information to them regarding the worth of any given article, and they obviously feel that she can do that for them.

While this is an unpaid responsibility, this is quite a feather in her professional cap. This says that her work has been recognized and her expertise acknowledged. Wow.

Obviously, we are so proud of her. But, we've always told her that, as proud as we are of what she has accomplished, we're even prouder of who she is.

One of the most wonderful things about the opportunity Jeanne and I have been given, living here in NZ, has been the chance to watch her interact with her boys. So many times, she has been cuddling or disciplining or something with the boys and J and I share a smile between us because she is such a good mom. She has 'such a way' with those little guys.

So, I just wanted to let all of you know about this good news. Our Allie has come quite a ways...in many ways. Jeanne and I are so thankful that we can share her world.
