Civil engineering priorities must be different here

NZ is a place where they'll build a bridge for the pedestrians, but not the cars.  Look at this little stream.  It goes over the road!

The stream is just this cute rivulet that starts in the mountains and gambols around a sheep paddock on its way out to sea near Huia.  Just before the beach, it crosses the road, and I mean crosses it (that's a two-lane road, by the way).

This is apparently how it was planned.  I mean, they took the time to put in an adorable little footbridge, but just couldn't seem to be bothered to throw a culvert under the roadbed.

So, you just slow down, size up how deep and fast it is (fortunately for me, it is neither of those things), and then just splash right on through it.  I liked how it made me feel all tough, like an intrepid pioneer conquering the wilderness.  Yeah, in my Civic.

I betcha that they put the pedistrian bridge up but not one for the cars because the cars have ready-made galoshes! ;)
